It’s a new phase for DJs. It probably was inevitable. Technology would catch up to reality in the DJ world and disrupt the norm. Or has it?
MWM (Music World Media) created a new wireless tracker for turntable DJs called Phase Essentiel. Since 2012, MWM has been designing and marketing mobile apps and connected objects dedicated to music, such as Phase and Mixfader. Thanks to its large products ecosystem, MWM is the world’s number 5 mobile music app publisher registering more than 200 million downloads across 182 countries.
Phase eliminates the need for cartridges and vinyl. DJs can take control of their tracks with a wireless remote. Instead of cartridges or control vinyl, two audio remotes capture the turntable rotation information and wirelessly transmit it to a receiver that processes and sends it to the DVS setup.

It still provides the sensation of mixing on standard audio records without giving up the comfort and quality of digital DJ controllers. The wireless tracker allows DJs to perform all the movements done on standard audio records – even the extra slow ones – on any setup with the same precision.
Sami Midani, Director of Business Development at SFM, the company distributing Phase in Canada, says,“It’s not every day that such an innovative DJ accessory product like Phase gets introduced into our market, and we believe that this solution is going to set a new standard for DJ control applications.”
The question is — IS it setting a new standard? Here are some comments.
DJ Soo (Vancouver DJ): Phase is more an item for convenience allowing using beat up, problematic turntables or avoiding having to buy a new deck if you’re sick of needles and control records, but want to keep the spinning platters.
Lou Paris (NY DJ): “After a brief download, installation, and hooking things up, I was off to the races. While I’ve only had them in my hand for less than 72 hours I continue to be impressed by them. If things of concern like using a 2.4GHz frequency hold up, this really will revolutionize the culture of DJing, especially for clubs.”
DJ Libertad (Oregon DJ): “Fantastic innovation! Turntablists can finally be free to perform without needle/tonearm restrictions and continue using their same gear. I’m sure it won’t be perfect but at least it’s a forward-thinking concept that will advance the possibilities within the DJ turntablist culture. It sure is a lot cheaper than Rane 12.”
A great Phase test to enjoy on video features DJ Jazzy Jeff or simply Jazz, an American record producer, DJ, actor and comedian, who is best known for his friendship and collaboration with Will Smith.
Easy-to-use and intuitive, Phase offers an unprecedented communication quality and reactivity, and is completely unaffected by external disruptions and common DJ equipment issues such as subwoofers and dust making needles skip and slip and needles breaking on gigs. DJs can get the Phase Essentiel with 2 controllers, Phase Ultimate with 4 controllers, handy if you ever need back-ups.
We’d like to hear your Phase story. If you’re performing with it, share a video or contact Shop Production World and let us know how it’s impacting you as a DJ.
