Speaking of Speakers

Portable speaker systems for public engagements.

Speaking of speakers, the professional speaker or workshop facilitator often relies on the venue to provide the technical resources required, such as an audio system and video system. However, there are those who want to ensure some certainty and reliability when it comes to the gear they need.

If you are someone who speaks in front of small to medium-sized groups (50 or less), then you might want to consider an audio system that is easily portable and delivers the quality of sound you want. Too often, the thing that kills a presentation is the quality of the audio. Although in-house systems have advanced significantly, such as ceiling speaker systems from companies like Bose or Denon or EV, many venues, especially small to large boardrooms, lack the technical gear either because of a lack of knowledge or budget.

[Workshop facilitators, DJs, speakers and fitness instructors need quality portable audio systems if they want to maintain consistent quality on their presentations.]

So, let’s take a look at some examples.

  1. DENON PRO AUDIO COMMANDER PORTABLE PA SYSTEM (under $900)

Speaking of Speakers

The Denon Pro Audio Commander is an all-in-one compact PA system designed for professional DJs, aerobics instructors, presenters or anyone needing a self-contained, self-powered unit without cables.  The Audio Commander can operate on its internal rechargeable battery or AC power.  Two UHF wireless microphones are included, along with the capability to play audio from Bluetooth devices, USB, and SD media.  There are also two XLR/TRS combo jacks to facilitate MIC/LINE inputs.  All of these features are packaged in a smartly-designed unit with luggage handle and wheels for easy transport and quick set-up.

It is a self-contained mobile P.A. system and operates on internal battery or AC power. It comes with two integral wireless microphones. It can playback from various sources including Bluetooth, SD/USB, external mics or portable players. The whole system folds into a luggage sized package with handle and wheels.

  1. BOSE L1 COMPACT WIRELESS PORTABLE LINE ARRAY SYSTEM (under $1300)

Bose L1 Compact Wireless Line Array System

The Bose L1 Compact Wireless is a portable line array system. It is designed to provide wide coverage, wired and wireless connectivity as well as a simple setup for musicians, DJs, and hosts. It’s perfect for restaurants, parties, conferences, and other special events. It features proprietary technology and multiple drivers to deliver nearly 180° of coverage for audiences of up to 100 people. In addition, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities are also provided by the included SoundTouch Wireless Link adapter, which connects via a supplied audio cable to the Bose L1 compact system. The system uses interlocking components that require no cables or stands.

  1. ELECTRO-VOICE EVOLVE50 COLUMN SPEAKER ARRAY (under $2000)

EV Portable Audio System

The EVOLVE 50 Portable Column System has three components.  This portable system is powered by a 1000 W Class-D amplifier and driven by Electro-Voice’s QuickSmartDSP. The system consists of a powered subwoofer. The bi-directional aluminum pole’s connection to the subwoofer is secured using a magnet. Eight 3.5″ speakers in the column array are connected to the 12″ subwoofer and can deliver up to 127 dB.

The eight composite waveguides control high frequencies with 120° of horizontal coverage, and 40° of asymmetrical (down-facing) vertical coverage to ensure suitable output for sitting and standing audiences. The sub pole and column array come prepackaged in a carrying bag. The processing engine allows for easy setup via four presets (Music, Live, Speech, and Club), three-band EQ, five user-programmable presets (Store and Recall settings), output delay, phantom power (+15V), visual monitoring of limiter status, input level control and meters, and master volume control to ensure optimal gain structure.

The new Electro-Voice QuickSmart Mobile application utilizes Bluetooth® Low Energy (BTLE) technology for the wireless configuration, control, and monitoring of up to six EVOLVE 50 systems simultaneously. High-resolution Bluetooth® audio streaming adds convenience for wireless music playback in breakout rooms, intermission, and musical accompaniment.

[Wireless systems are favoured by fitness instructors and speakers who like to move around the stage.]

So, when it comes to speaking of speakers, if you are a professional who is busy giving presentations either within your region or on the road, you won’t be able to rely on the consistency of the technology you run into. An investment in a portable audio system is a better solution.
